Program Overview

Chinese Language, Culture and Society is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with a deep understanding of Chinese language, cultural traditions, social structures, and contemporary developments in China. Units 3 and 4 represent the advanced level of this program, building upon foundational knowledge and skills developed in Units 1 and 2.

This program is ideal for students who wish to:

Course Description

Unit 3: Advanced Language Acquisition

Unit 3 focuses on developing advanced language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking Mandarin Chinese. Students will engage with authentic Chinese materials including newspapers, literature, academic texts, and multimedia resources. Emphasis is placed on:

• Expanding vocabulary to approximately 1,500-2,000 words
• Understanding complex grammatical structures
• Developing academic writing skills
• Improving listening comprehension through authentic audio materials
• Enhancing speaking abilities for formal and informal contexts

Unit 4: Contemporary Chinese Society and Culture

Unit 4 explores contemporary Chinese society in its cultural context, examining topics such as urbanization, economic development, family structure, education, arts, and media. Students will develop critical analytical skills through:

• Case studies of Chinese cities and rural communities
• Analysis of Chinese films, literature, and visual arts
• Examination of current social issues and debates in China
• Exploration of Chinese digital culture and social media
• Consideration of China's global influence and cultural diplomacy

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of Units 3 and 4, students will be able to:

• Communicate effectively in Mandarin Chinese at an advanced level

Eligibility and Prerequisites

To be eligible for enrollment in Units 3 and 4, students must:

1. Have successfully completed Units 1 and 2 of the Chinese Language, Culture and Society program, OR
2. Demonstrate equivalent proficiency in Mandarin Chinese through a placement test, OR
3. Have approval from the Program Director based on prior Chinese language study or experience

Assessment Structure

Assessment for Units 3 and 4 includes a variety of tasks designed to evaluate different aspects of language proficiency and cultural understanding:

Unit 3 Assessment

• Written compositions (30%)
• Oral presentations and conversations (20%)
• Reading comprehension tests (20%)
• Listening comprehension exercises (15%)
• Vocabulary and grammar quizzes (15%)

Unit 4 Assessment

• Research essay on a cultural or social topic (25%)
• Class presentations on contemporary issues (20%)

Application Process

To apply for enrollment in Units 3 and 4 of the Chinese Language, Culture and Society program, please follow these steps:

1. Complete the online application form available through the university portal
2. Submit a personal statement (300-500 words) explaining your interest in studying Chinese language, culture, and society
3. Provide academic transcripts demonstrating completion of Units 1 and 2 or equivalent language study
4. If applicable, submit results from any standardized Chinese language proficiency tests
5. Arrange for one academic reference to be sent to the Program Office

Fees and Scholarships
