Written Examination Guide
Overview
VCE Chinese Language, Culture and Society is a Victorian Certificate of Education study designed for students who have little or no previous knowledge of the Chinese language. It aims to develop students' intercultural communication skills, knowledge of Chinese-speaking communities, and appreciation of the connections between language and culture.
The written examination is a critical component of the assessment, comprising 50% of the final study score. It tests students' ability to comprehend written and spoken Chinese, respond in Chinese, and analyze cultural content.
Examination Structure
The written examination is typically 2 hours in duration plus some additional reading time. It consists of three sections:
Section A: Listening and Responding
Students listen to several spoken texts in Chinese and answer questions in English. This section assesses comprehension of spoken Chinese and understanding of the cultural content presented.
- Duration: Approximately 30 minutes
- Weight: 20% of examination
- Format: Multiple choice, short and extended responses
Section B: Reading and Responding
Students read several texts in Chinese and respond in English to questions about the content, language features, and cultural aspects. This section tests comprehension of written Chinese and analytical skills.
- Duration: Approximately 50 minutes
- Weight: 25% of examination
- Format: Multiple choice, short and extended responses
Section C: Writing in Chinese
Students write a response in Chinese to a prompt related to one of the prescribed themes. This section assesses students' ability to communicate ideas effectively in written Chinese.
- Duration: Approximately 40 minutes
- Weight: 25% of examination
- Format: Structured text of approximately 300 characters
Prescribed Themes
The examination content is based on three broad themes that provide a framework for studying Chinese language and culture:
- Self and Personal World: Personal identity, family life, relationships, health and wellbeing, personal aspirations.
- Traditions and Change in Chinese-speaking Communities: Major festivals, traditional customs, social changes, generational differences.
- Global Chinese-speaking Communities: Migrant experiences, Chinese communities overseas, Chinese cultural influence worldwide.
Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of these themes across the examination sections.

Develop Listening Skills

Examination Techniques
Time Management
- Allocate specific times for each section based on the suggested durations
