Why Holiday Homework?

Summer break is a wonderful time for relaxation, travel and family fun. At Datta Meghe World Academy we also view the holidays as an opportunity for children to keep their minds active, develop good study habits and explore new interests. The Grade2 homework packet is designed to be lighthearted, engaging and easy to complete without causing stress.

Core Subjects Covered

• English reading, comprehension, spelling and basic writing.
• Mathematics addition, subtraction, simple multiplication, shapes and measurement.
• Science observation of the natural world, simple experiments and facts about plants and animals.
• Social Studies community helpers, festivals and basic map skills.
• Art & Craft creative projects using everyday materials.

English Language & Literacy

Reading: Choose any two storybooks (one fiction, one nonfiction) and read for at least 20 minutes each day. After reading, answer the questions on the worksheet: Who are the main characters? What happened first? What was the lesson?

Spelling: A list of 20 new words is provided. Practice each word by writing it three times, then use it in a simple sentence.

Writing: Write a short My Summer Diary entry (57 sentences). Include what you did, who you were with, and something new you learned.

Mathematics Numbers & Shapes

Addition & Subtraction: Complete the workbook page with addition problems up to 20 and subtraction problems up to 15. Use objects (coins, beads) if needed.

Multiplication Introduction: Learn the concept of two groups of three. Draw pictures to show 23 = 6.

Shapes & Patterns: Find and list five different shapes you see around the house (e.g., rectangle door, circular clock). Create a pattern using colors or objects and describe the rule.

Measurement: Measure the length of three objects using a ruler (in centimeters). Record the measurements in a table.

Science Exploring the World

Plant Observation: Plant a bean seed in a small pot. Observe it daily and draw a picture of its growth, noting the height each week.

Simple Experiment: Conduct the Floating & Sinking experiment. Gather 5 objects, place them in a bowl of water and note which float and which sink. Explain why using the concept of density.

Animal Facts: Choose one animal you like. Write three facts about its habitat, diet, and one interesting behavior.

Social Studies Our Community

Community Helpers: Interview a family member who works as a doctor, teacher, police officer, etc. Write two sentences about what they do and why its important.

Festivals: List three festivals celebrated in your family during the summer. Briefly describe one special activity associated with each.

Map Skills: Draw a simple map of your neighborhood showing your home, school, a park and the road you take to get there.

Art & Craft Creativity Corner

Collage: Using old magazines, create a summerthemed collage (beach, sun, fruit). Glue the pieces on a sheet of paper and give it a title.

Story Illustration: Illustrate a scene from the story you read for English. Use crayons, watercolour or coloured pencils.

Recycled Craft: Make a small animal using a plastic bottle, cardboard, and other recyclable items. Write a short description of how you made it.

How to Submit

All assignments should be neatly completed in the supplied workbook. Once the holiday period ends, bring the workbook, any artwork and the plant pot back to school. If you prefer a digital copy, you may take photographs of each page and email them to summerhomework@dmwa.edu by 5July.

Helpful Tips for Parents

• Set a regular time each day 3045 minutes works well.
• Provide a quiet, welllit space for reading and writing.
• Encourage your child to talk about what they did; this reinforces learning.
• Celebrate completed tasks with small rewards stickers, extra playtime, or a favourite snack.
