Ecologically Critical Areas

Definition

Ecologically Critical Areas (ECAs) are zones that contain ecosystems, habitats, or species of significant biological, ecological, or cultural value. They are often irreplaceable, support high biodiversity, provide essential ecosystem services, or act as natural buffers against environmental hazards. Because of their importance, ECAs receive special legal or policy attention to safeguard them from unsustainable exploitation.
