What Is the Grant County Futures Scholarship?

The Grant County Futures Scholarship is a communitybased award designed to help highschool seniors and current college students from Grant County pursue higher education without the burden of excessive tuition costs. Established by local businesses, the Grant County School District, and private donors, the scholarship aims to retain bright talent in the area and encourage graduates to return after college to contribute to the local economy.

Eligibility Requirements

Students must meet all of the following criteria to be considered:

  • Residency: Must be a legal resident of Grant County for at least two consecutive years prior to application.
  • Academic standing: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent). Exceptions are made for students with significant community involvement or extenuating circumstances.
  • Enrollment: Must be accepted into an accredited twoyear or fouryear college or university in the United States.
  • Financial need: Applicants must submit a FAFSA or a documented explanation of financial need.
  • Community involvement: Demonstrated participation in volunteer work, leadership roles, or extracurricular activities that benefit Grant County.

Application Process

Applications are accepted annually from January 15 to March 30. The process consists of the following steps:

  1. Online application: Complete the form on the official scholarship website.
  2. Transcripts: Upload official highschool or college transcripts.
  3. Essay: Submit a 500word essay answering the prompt, How will receiving the Grant County Futures Scholarship help you achieve your career goals and give back to the community?
  4. Recommendation letters: Provide two lettersone from a teacher or counselor and another from a community leader or employer.
  5. Financial documentation: Attach the FAFSA summary or other proof of need.

All materials must be submitted electronically. Paper submissions are not accepted.

Selection Criteria

The selection committee, comprised of educators, business leaders, and former scholarship recipients, evaluates applicants using a weighted rubric:

  • Academic achievement 30%
  • Financial need 25%
  • Community service and leadership 25%
  • Essay quality and clarity of goals 20%

Final decisions are announced on May 15, and award letters are mailed to successful candidates.

Scholarship Benefits

The award covers up to $5,000 per academic year. Funds are disbursed directly to the recipients college tuition account, and any remaining balance can be used for books, supplies, or other approved educational expenses.

Recipients are also invited to participate in an annual Futures Leadership Summit, a networking event that connects students with local employers, mentors, and alumni.

Renewal Requirements

To maintain the scholarship for subsequent years, students must:

  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.8.
  • Submit a midterm progress report each semester detailing academic standing and any community involvement.
  • Participate in at least one community service project per year, documented with photos or a brief writeup.

Failure to meet these criteria may result in reduction or termination of the award.
