What is IBPS CWE?

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) conducts the Common Written Examination (CWE) every year to recruit clerks, junior associates, and probationary officers for public sector banks across India. It is a single, centralized test that serves as the first stage of selection for multiple banks, making it a costeffective and timesaving gateway for banking aspirants.

Every year, lakhs of candidates appear for the exam, attracted by the stability, career growth, and attractive salary packages offered by public sector banks. Success in the CWE opens doors to interviews and group discussions, which ultimately determine the final posting.

Eligibility Criteria

• Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen.
• Age: Minimum 20 years and maximum 30 years as on 1st August of the exam year (age relaxation as per government norms).
• Educational Qualification:
  • Clerk: 10+2 (any stream) from a recognized board.
  • Junior Associate: Graduation (any discipline) from a recognized university.
  • Probationary Officer: Graduation (any discipline) from a recognized university.
• Physical Standards: Must meet the physical standards prescribed by the banks.

Exam Pattern

The CWE is a computerbased test (CBT) consisting of three sections. The total duration is 150 minutes (2 hours). The outline is as follows:

Each correct answer awards 1 mark; there is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.

Effective Preparation Strategies

1. Build Strong Foundations

• Read the theory, solve the examples, and then attempt the exercise set.

2. Practice with Timed Mock Tests

• Take a fulllength mock at least once a week.
• Analyse performance: identify weak topics, calculate accuracy and speed.
• Use the analysis to revise only the problematic areas.

3. Develop a Formula Sheet

• Write down all important formulas, shortcuts, and rules on a single A4 sheet.
• Revise it daily, especially during the final two weeks.

4. Master Time Management

• Allocate roughly 50 minutes per section during the exam.
• If a question feels timeconsuming, mark it and move on; return later if time permits.

5. Focus on Accuracy

• Negative marking makes blind guessing risky.
• Practice eliminating wrong options; if you can rule out one, your chance of a correct guess jumps to 50%.
