IELTS Academic Writing Task1 Band9 Sample PDFs

Free, highquality examples to help you master the analysis of graphs, tables, charts and maps.

Why Band9 Samples Matter

In the IELTS Academic Writing Task1 you are asked to summarise visual information in about 150 words. The examiners look for four key criteria:

  • Task achievement: covering all main features, providing an overview, and selecting relevant data.
  • Coherence & cohesion: logical sequencing, appropriate linking words, and clear paragraphing.
  • Lexical resource: a wide range of accurate vocabulary and collocations.
  • Grammatical range & accuracy: varied sentence structures with minimal errors.

A Band9 answer fulfills each criterion flawlessly. Studying authentic Band9 samples gives you a concrete model of what the examiners expect, helps you internalise useful language, and shows you how to structure the report efficiently.

What Youll Find in the PDF Collection

The downloadable PDFs contain 20 different Task1 prompts taken from past examinations. Each sample includes:

  • A clear copy of the original visual (graph, table, pie chart, map, or process diagram).
  • An annotated Band9 essay with notes on:
    • How the overview is built.
    • Key data selection techniques.
    • Effective linking phrases.
    • Vocabulary highlights (e.g., a sharp decline, remained stable).
  • A wordcount check to reassure you that the answer stays within the 150word limit.
  • Selfassessment checklists that let you compare your own writing to the model.

All PDFs are formatted for easy printing or onscreen reading on tablets, smartphones, and computers.

How to Use the Samples Effectively

1. Analyse Before You Copy

Read the prompt, study the visual, and try to write your own summary first. Once finished, compare it with the Band9 example. Identify:

  • Missing data points or unnecessary details.
  • Differences in paragraph structure.
  • Vocabulary that could be substituted for more precise terms.

2. Focus on the Overview

The overview is the most critical part of a Task1 answer. In every sample youll see a concise sentence or two that captures the overall trend without mentioning numbers. Practice recreating this sentence using different verbs (e.g., rose, experienced a surge, plummeted).

3. Build a Template

From the collection you can extract a reusable template:

Introduction paraphrase the task.Overview describe the main trend(s).Body paragraph 1 select two or three significant data points.Body paragraph 2 select another two or three data points, compare/contrast if appropriate.

Adapt the template to each new visual; never use it wordforword.

4. Upgrade Your Lexical Resource

Highlight all the highlevel adjectives, adverbs, and verbs in the samples. Create personal flashcards and practice using them in different sentences. Example:

  • The number of applicants peaked at 9,800 in 2020.
  • A modest increase of 4% was observed between 2015 and 2016.

5. Track Grammar Accuracy

Notice how the Band9 essays vary sentence structures: simple, compound, and complex sentences with subordinate clauses. Rewrite each sentence in the sample using a different structure while keeping the meaning intact. This exercise boosts flexibility and reduces reliance on formulaic sentences.
