IELTS Band 9 Writing Task 1 Data Charts & Graphs

Achieving a Band 9 in IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 demands more than simply describing a chart. It requires a sophisticated blend of accurate data handling, precise vocabulary, logical organisation and an academic tone that convinces the examiner of your language mastery. This guide breaks down the essential strategies, language resources and a stepbystep model answer so you can aim confidently at the highest score.

1. Understanding the Task Requirements

Task 1 asks you to summarise visual information usually one of the following:

  • Bar/column chart
  • Line graph
  • Pie chart
  • Table
  • Mixed chart (e.g., bar + line)
  • Process diagram or map (less common for Band 9 focus)

Key expectations:

  • Identify overall trends, major differences and notable exceptions.
  • Select the most significant data points; you are not required to mention every single figure.
  • Organise your answer into an introduction, an overview, and two or three body paragraphs.
  • Use a range of complex grammatical structures and precise lexical items.
  • Maintain a formal academic register throughout.

2. The FourParagraph Blueprint

2.1 Introduction (Paraphrase)

Rewrite the task prompt in your own words. Do not copy any part of the question verbatim. Use synonyms and change the grammatical structure.

Task prompt: The bar chart below shows the proportion of households owning three types of electronic devices in 2022.

Paraphrase: The diagram illustrates the percentage of homes that possessed televisions, computers and smartphones during the year 2022.

2.2 Overview (General Trend)

This paragraph is the most crucial for a high band. Summarise the main trend(s) without any specific numbers. Look for:

  • Overall increase or decrease.
  • Highest and lowest values.
  • Stability or sharp fluctuations.

2.3 Body Paragraph 1 Major Data

Choose the two or three most striking data points. Discuss them using comparative language.

2.4 Body Paragraph 2 Supporting Details

Present additional relevant figures that help to explain the trend. Group data logically (by category, time period, or region) and use linking devices to maintain cohesion.

3. Lexical Resource for Describing Data

Using a wide range of vocabulary shows the examiner you can manipulate language precisely. Below are lexical sets you can draw from.

3.1 Verbs of Change

  • increase rise, climb, soar, surge, grow, ascend, jump
  • decrease fall, decline, drop, dip, plunge, shrink, dwindle
  • remain stable stay level, hold steady, plateau, level off

3.2 Nouns for Amounts

  • percentage, proportion, share, fraction, rate, figure, proportion
  • peak, high point, low point, minimum, maximum, average

3.3 Adverbs & Phrases for Comparison

  • significantly, dramatically, markedly, slightly, marginally
  • twice as much, three times higher, double, half, onethird
  • in contrast, whereas, while, compared with, relative to

3.4 Linking Devices

  • Firstly, secondly, finally
  • Moreover, furthermore, additionally
  • Consequently, as a result, therefore
  • In spite of, despite, although
  • To sum up, in brief, overall

4. Grammatical Structures that Impress

  • Complex sentences with subordinate clauses: Although the proportion of , the number of
  • Passive forms when the agent is unknown: The data were collected from
  • Relative clauses to embed extra information: The year 2015, which marked a turning point,
  • Conditionals for hypothetical comparison: If the trend continues,
  • Varied sentence beginnings prepositional phrases, participial clauses.

5. Model Answer (Band 9) Sample Task

Task: The line graph below shows the number of international tourist arrivals in three European cities between 2000 and 2020.

IntroductionThe line graph illustrates the annual volume of overseas visitors to Paris, Rome and Barcelona over a twentyyear period from 2000 to 2020.OverviewOverall, Barcelona experienced the most pronounced growth, climbing from roughly 2 million arrivals in 2000 to just over 9 million in 2020, whereas Paris and Rome displayed relatively modest fluctuations, with Paris maintaining the highest absolute figures throughout the whole period.Body Paragraph 1In 2000, Paris was the most frequented destination, attracting about 10 million tourists, which was double the number recorded in Rome (5 million) and five times that of Barcelona (2 million). Between 2000 and 2008, Pariss visitor count rose steadily, reaching a peak of 12.5 million in 2008 before a slight decline to 11.8 million in 2010, coinciding with the global financial crisis. Romes figures followed a similar pattern, peaking at 6.4 million in 2007 and then slipping to 5.9 million in 2010.Body Paragraph 2Barcelona, by contrast, demonstrated a dramatic upward trajectory. From 2000 to 2015 the citys arrivals surged by more than 300%, soaring from 2 million to 8 million, driven largely by the citys burgeoning reputation as a cultural hotspot and the expansion of lowcost airlines. The upward trend continued, albeit at a slower pace, and by 2020 the city welcomed just over 9 million tourists, overtaking both Paris and Rome in absolute numbers.

6. Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Listing numbers without interpretation: Simply enumerating data shows no analytical skill.
  • Overgeneralising: Statements like tourism increased without specifying the magnitude or timeframe are weak.
  • Repeating vocabulary: Use synonyms and varied structures; avoid increase more than three times.
  • Incorrect tense usage: Use past simple for completed data (20002020), but present simple for general trends that are still valid.
  • Forgetting the overview: Examiners allocate a high band for a clear, concise overview.

7. Practice Checklist

  • Paraphrase the prompt accurately.
  • Write a 2sentence overview covering the main trend(s).
  • Select 46 key data points two for the first body paragraph, the rest for the second.
  • Use at least three different comparative structures.
  • Include a range of complex sentences (subordinate, relative, passive).
  • Stay within 150180 words and keep the tone formal.

8. Final Thoughts

Band 9 Writing Task 1 is achievable when you combine accurate data selection with highlevel language. Focus on presenting a clear, logical argument rather than merely describing every figure. Regularly practice with authentic IELTS charts, time yourself, and compare your writing against the checklist above. With persistent effort, the sophisticated style required for a top band will become second nature.
