Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS)
The Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS) is a prestigious fullyfunded scholarship programme established by the Government of Malaysia to attract outstanding international students to pursue postgraduate studies at Malaysian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Since its launch, MIS has helped thousands of scholars from over 70 countries to achieve academic excellence while experiencing Malaysias vibrant multicultural environment.
Key Features of the MIS
- Full Tuition Coverage: Tuition fees for the entire duration of the programme are paid directly to the host university.
- Living Allowance: A monthly stipend (approximately RM 2,200 RM 2,400) to cover accommodation, meals and basic expenses.
- Travel Support: Roundtrip airfare from the scholars home country to Malaysia.
- Health Insurance: Comprehensive medical coverage for the whole scholarship period.
- Research & Development Allowance: Additional funds for research materials, conference participation and field trips (where applicable).
- OneYear Extension: Possibility to extend the scholarship for a further year on merit, subject to university approval.
Who Is Eligible?
The MIS is open to candidates who meet the following criteria:
- Citizenship of a nonMalaysian country (including Singapore, Brunei and other ASEAN nations).
- Academic excellence a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale (or equivalent) for the most recent degree.
- English proficiency IELTS6.0 (or TOEFLiBT80) or higher.
- A valid bachelor's degree (for MSc programmes) or a masters degree (for PhD programmes) from a recognised university.
- Strong research proposal or statement of purpose that aligns with the host universitys expertise.

The scholarship covers a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to:

- Health Sciences and Medicine*
*Medical programmes are offered on a casebycase basis and may have additional requirements.
Application Process
1. Choose a Host Institution
Start by visiting the official portal of Malaysian universities to explore programmes that suit your career goals. Each university lists its MISeligible courses and the respective entry requirements.
2. Prepare Required Documents
Typical documents include:
- Completed online application form
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates
- English language test results
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) highlighting research, publications and work experience
- Research proposal or study plan (max 2,000 words)
- Two academic references
- Copy of passport
3. Submit Application
Applications are submitted through the MIS online portal. The usual intake period runs from May to August for the September academic session. Late submissions are rarely accepted.
4. Selection & Interview
After an initial eligibility screening, shortlisted candidates are invited for a virtual interview conducted by a panel of academic staff from the host university. The interview assesses research aptitude, motivation and alignment with the programme.
5. Offer & Acceptance
Successful applicants receive an official scholarship offer letter. Acceptances must be confirmed within 30 days, followed by the submission of a Visa Application Form (VAF) to the Malaysian High Commission.
