Monopoly Board Game Rules
Introduction
Monopoly is a classic board game that has entertained families for generations. Players move around the board buying, trading, and developing properties with the goal of bankrupting opponents and becoming the wealthiest player. While specific rule sets may vary slightly depending on the edition, the core gameplay remains consistent across versions.
Game Components
Before starting, ensure you have all the necessary components:
- Game board featuring various property spaces, special spaces, and corner squares
- Two 6-sided dice
- Property title deeds for each space on the board
- Play money in various denominations
- Player tokens (playing pieces)
- Houses and hotels for property development
- Chance and Community Chest cards
Game Objective
The objective of Monopoly is to become the wealthiest player through buying, renting, and developing property. The winner is the last player remaining after all other players have gone bankrupt.
Setting Up
- Place the board in the center of the playing area
- Each player selects a token to represent them on the board
- Shuffle the Chance and Community Chest cards and place them face-down on their respective spaces on the board
- Choose a banker who will manage the bank's money, properties, and buildings
- The banker gives each player $1500 in starting money (typically: 2x $500, 4x $100, 1x $50, 1x $20, 2x $10, 1x $5, 5x $1)
- Roll the dice to determine the starting player; highest roll goes first
Basic Gameplay
Players take turns clockwise around the board. On your turn:
- Roll both dice and move your token the indicated number of spaces
- Follow the instructions for the space you land on
- If you roll doubles, you get another turn after completing your actions
- If you roll three consecutive doubles, you must move your token directly to "In Jail"
Important: While in jail, you cannot collect rent from properties. You can get out of jail by: (1) rolling doubles on any of your next three turns, (2) paying $50 before rolling the dice on either of your next two turns, or (3) using a "Get Out of Jail Free" card.
Property Rules
When you land on an unowned property, you may buy it from the bank at the price listed on the board. If you choose not to buy it, the property goes up for auction to the highest bidding player.
When you land on an owned property:
- If owned by another player, you must pay rent according to the property's title deed
- If owned by you, nothing happens
- Property is mortgaged if the title deed is face-down; no rent is collected on mortgaged properties
Color Groups
- Brown: Mediterranean Avenue, Baltic Avenue
- Light Blue: Oriental Avenue, Vermont Avenue, Connecticut Avenue
- Pink: St. Charles Place, States Avenue, Virginia Avenue
- Orange: St. James Place, Tennessee Avenue, New York Avenue
- Red: Kentucky Avenue, Indiana Avenue, Illinois Avenue
- Yellow: Atlantic Avenue, Ventnor Avenue, Marvin Gardens
- Green: Pacific Avenue, North Carolina Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue
- Dark Blue: Park Place, Boardwalk
Building Houses and Hotels
When you own all properties in a color group (a "monopoly"), you may build houses and hotels on them:
- Houses must be built evenly: you cannot build a second house on a property until you have built one on each property in the group
- Hotels can only be built after all four houses have been built on each property in the group
- Rent increases with each house or hotel added
- The bank has a limited supply of houses (typically 32) and hotels (typically 12)
Building Costs: Houses cost varying amounts by color group ($50-$200), while hotels cost the same as houses plus four houses in exchange.
Special Spaces
- Go: Collect $200 salary when you pass "Go"
- In Jail: Just visiting when landing normally; must follow jail rules if sent there
- Free Parking: In official rules, nothing happens (though many house rules place money or penalties here)
- Go to Jail: Move your token directly to jail; do not pass go, do not collect $200
- Income Tax: Pay $200 or 10% of your total assets (whichever is less)
- Luxury Tax: Pay $75
Chance and Community Chest
When you land on these spaces, draw the top card from the corresponding deck and follow its instructions. Instructions may include gaining or losing money, moving to another space, getting out of jail, etc. "Get Out of Jail Free" cards are kept by the player until used.
Utilities and Railroads
Utilities (Electric Company & Water Works)
- If one utility is owned, rent is 4 times the dice roll
- If owned by the same player who owns both, rent is 10 times the dice roll
Railroads (4 spaces)
- Rent increases with each additional railroad owned by the same player:
- 1 railroad: $25
- 2 railroads: $50
- 3 railroads: $100
- 4 railroads: $200
Mortgages
When you need money, you may mortgage properties you own. The mortgage value is half of the property's purchase price:
- Turn the title deed face-down to indicate it's mortgaged
- Collect the mortgage value from the bank
- No rent is collected on mortgaged properties
- To unmortgage, pay the mortgage value plus 10% interest
- Buildings must be sold back to the bank (at half price) before you can mortgage a property
Trading
Players may trade properties, money, and "Get Out of Jail Free" cards between themselves at any time. This is a strategic element of the game and can create beneficial monopolies. However, you cannot trade houses or hotels (they must be sold back to the bank first).
Bankruptcy
A player is bankrupt when they owe more than they can pay. When this happens:
- If bankrupt to another player, that player receives all of the bankrupt player's assets
- If bankrupt to the bank, the bank takes all assets and auctions off any properties
- The bankrupt player is out of the game
Winning: The game ends when only one player remains (everyone else is bankrupt). This player is declared the winner!
Game Tips
- Focus on acquiring properties that form monopolies rather than scattered properties
- Orange and Red properties are statistically the most landed-on
- Don't spend all your money early; maintain a cash reserve
- Consider building quickly once you have a monopoly to maximize your rent potential
- Trading is key - be strategic but fair, as other players may not trade with you if you're unreasonably demanding
- Maintain houses on your properties before building hotels, especially if houses are running low
Common Variations and House Rules
Many groups play with house rules, though these typically extend the length of the game. Popular variations include:
- Placing all money from taxes and penalties in the center of the board; landing on Free Parking collects this pot
- Receiving double salary ($400) for landing directly on "Go"
- Dealing two property cards to each player at the beginning of the game
- No auctioning unclaimed properties (the property remains unsold until someone lands on it again)
Game Length: Standard Monopoly games typically last 1-4 hours. Players looking for shorter games may wish to use official speed play rules or set a time limit, with the wealthiest player winning when time expires.
