Monopoly is a classic board game that was first published by Parker Brothers in 1935. The game is about real estate trading and banking, where players compete to become the wealthiest player by buying, renting, and trading properties. It's a game of strategy, luck, and negotiation that can be enjoyed by 2-8 players.
The standard Monopoly game includes:
Players roll the dice and move their tokens clockwise around the board the number of spaces indicated. If you roll doubles, you take another turn after you complete your first turn. However, if you roll doubles three times in a row, your token moves directly to the "In Jail" space.
When you land on a property owned by another player, that owner collects rent from you based on the property's Title Deed card. Rent increases if the owner owns all properties in a color group (monopoly) or has developed the property with houses or hotels.
When you land on an unowned property, you may buy it by paying the banker the purchase price listed on the board. If you decline to buy it, the property is auctioned-off to the highest bidder starting at any price. Any player may bid, including the player who passed on buying it initially.
Once you own all properties in a color group, you may begin building houses. You may build houses on any property in the color group you own, but they must be built evenly. You cannot build a second house on a property until you have built one house on each property in the color group. The price for houses is listed on each Title Deed card.
When you have four houses on each property in a color group, you may replace the four houses with a hotel. You return the four houses to the bank and pay the price for the hotel listed on the Title Deed card.
When you land on a Chance or Community Chest space, draw the top card from the corresponding deck, follow its instructions, then return it to the bottom of the deck.
When you land on "Income Tax," you must pay the banker $200 or 10% of your total assets (whichever is higher). When you land on "Luxury Tax," you must pay $75 to the banker.
You land in "Jail" if:
While in jail, you can still collect rent, buy houses/hotels, and participate in auctions. You may leave jail by:
In the standard rules, Free Parking is just a resting place. You collect no money when landing here, though many players have house rules that place taxes and fines in the center of the board to be collected by the player landing on Free Parking.
A player is declared bankrupt when they owe more money than they can pay to either another player or the Bank. In this case, the player gives all assets to the creditor (player or Bank) and is out of the game.
If you owe money to another player, you must turn over all assets to that player. Before giving up your properties, however, you may sell houses and hotels and mortgage properties to raise money.
If you owe money to the Bank, you must turn over all assets to the Bank. The Bank then auctions any properties with buildings still on them.
The game ends when all players except one are bankrupt. The remaining player is the winner. Some players prefer to set a time limit, and at the end of that time, the player with the most assets (cash, property value, buildings) wins.
Monopoly has many official variants, including themed versions (Star Wars, Disney, etc.), but also encourages house rules. Common house rules include:
While these can make the game more fun for some groups, they often extend gameplay time.
Monopoly balances luck and strategy, making every game unique. While the rules outlined above represent the standard game, remember that the most important rule is to have fun!
