Nasal Fracture PostOperative Discharge Instructions

Congratulations on completing your nasal fracture surgery. The following instructions are designed to help you heal safely, reduce complications, and achieve the best possible cosmetic and functional outcome. Please read them carefully and keep this page with you for reference.

1. General Care

  • Rest: Take it easy for the first 2448 hours. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or bending over.
  • Positioning: Keep your head elevated (about 3045) while sleeping to decrease swelling.
  • Environment: Stay in a clean, wellventilated area. Avoid dusty or smoky surroundings that can irritate the nasal lining.

2. Medications

  • Pain control: Take prescribed analgesics as directed, usually every 46 hours. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
  • Antibiotics: Complete the full course even if you feel fine. This prevents infection.
  • Antiinflammatory: If your surgeon gave you ibuprofen or another NSAID, use it with food to protect your stomach.
  • Allergy note: Report any rash, itching, swelling, or breathing difficulty to your doctor immediately.

3. Nasal Packing / Splint

If packing or a temporary splint was placed, follow these specific guidelines:

  • Do not disturb the packing.
  • Gentle nasal breathing is allowed; avoid blowing your nose.
  • Expect a salty or metallic taste; this is normal.
  • Plan for removal as scheduled (usually 4872hours after surgery).

4. Swelling & Bruising

Swelling is most pronounced in the first 4872hours and may last up to two weeks.

  • Apply a cold compress (wrapped in a thin cloth) to the bridge and cheeks for 15minutes on, 15minutes off, during the first 24hours.
  • After 24hours, switch to a warm compress for 1015minutes, 34 times daily, to aid circulation.
  • Do not apply pressure directly to the nose.

5. Nasal Hygiene

Keeping the nasal passages clean reduces infection risk.

  • Saline rinse: Use a sterile saline spray or a neti pot with lukewarm saline solution 23 times daily, beginning 48hours after surgery.
  • Do not use commercial decongestant sprays for the first week unless instructed.

6. Activities & Diet

  • Diet: Soft foods for the first 23 days. Avoid hot soups or spicy dishes that may increase nasal blood flow.
  • Exercise: No aerobic or contact sports for at least 2weeks. Light walking is acceptable after the first 24hours.
  • Driving: Refrain from driving while taking narcotic pain medication or if you feel drowsy.

7. What to Avoid

  • Blowing your nose or sneezing with your mouth closedopen your mouth slightly to reduce pressure.
  • Wearing glasses, sunglasses, or any objects that press on the bridge for the first week.
  • Alcohol and smoking for at least 7days, as they impair healing and increase bleeding risk.
  • Hot tubs, saunas, or swimming pools for 1014days.

8. Warning Signs When to Call Your Surgeon

  • Excessive bleeding (soaking a pad for more than 15minutes).
  • Severe pain that is not relieved by medication.
  • Fever greater than 38C (100.4F) or chills.
  • Increasing swelling after the first 34 days.
  • Persistent foul odor or thick yellow/green discharge.
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose after packing removal.
  • Any sudden change in vision or severe headache.

9. FollowUp Appointments

  • First visit: Typically 57days postop for packing removal and wound check.
  • Second visit: 23weeks for splint removal and early assessment of alignment.
  • Final evaluation: 68weeks to confirm healing and discuss any further cosmetic refinement.

10. LongTerm Care

  • Continue gentle saline rinses for up to 4weeks.
  • Protect the nose from trauma; use protective gear when engaging in contact sports after full healing.
  • Maintain good nasal hygiene and avoid frequent nasal picking.

11. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear a mask?

Yes, a soft, noncompressive mask is fine after the first week, provided it does not press on the nasal bridge.

When will the bruising fade?

Bruising typically fades within 1014days, though some discoloration may linger up to a month.

Will my nose look different?

Temporary swelling may make the nose appear larger for 23weeks. Final shape is usually evident after 68weeks.

Is it safe to fly?

Avoid air travel for at least 2weeks, or longer if packing is still in place, because pressure changes can cause discomfort or bleeding.
