Our PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is designed to build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy education and contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions. The program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and accepts 4 residents per year.
Over the course of 12 months, residents gain experience in various pharmacy practice settings while developing skills in clinical pharmacy practice, teaching, and scholarship. Our program emphasizes evidence-based medicine, interprofessional collaboration, and patient-centered care.
Graduates of our program are well-prepared for positions in acute care settings, academia, or to pursue specialized PGY2 training in areas such as critical care, infectious diseases, oncology, or cardiology.
Program Structure
Clinical Rotations
Experience diverse clinical areas including internal medicine, critical care, ambulatory care, infectious diseases, and more.
Didactic Education
Participate in weekly education conferences, journal clubs, and case presentations to enhance clinical knowledge.
Precepting Experience
Develop teaching skills by precepting pharmacy students during introductory and advanced practice rotations.
Research & Scholarship
Complete a practice-based research project with mentorship from experienced clinical pharmacists.
Leadership Development
Participate in committee meetings and pharmacy management rotations to develop administrative skills.
Direct Patient Care
Provide comprehensive medication management as part of interprofessional healthcare teams.
Program Requirements
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy
- Licensure as a pharmacist in our state (or eligible for licensure)
- Completion of a pharmacy practice internship or equivalent experience
- Strong academic record and professional references
- Participation in the ASHP Matching Program
- On-site interview with program faculty and current residents
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (visas not sponsored)

Application Process
Application Review
Our residency selection committee reviews applications in January. Selected candidates are invited for on-site interviews in February.
Interview Day
Interviews include meetings with program leadership, preceptors, and current residents. Candidates participate in a case presentation and tour of our facilities.
Rank Submission
Candidates and programs submit their rankings to the ASHP Matching Program by early March.
Match Results
Match results are released in mid-March, with notification sent to all candidates who interviewed with our program.
Residency Orientation
The program begins in late June/early July with a comprehensive orientation that prepares residents for their first clinical rotation.

Longitudinal Experiences
- Medication Safety: Ongoing participation in hospital committees
- Pharmacy Administration: Monthly managerial experience
- Teaching: Precepting pharmacy students
- Drug Information: Scheduled coverage of DI requests
- Code Response: Participation in hospital code team
Educational Activities

Dr. Sarah Johnson, RPh, PharmD, BCPS serves as our Residency Program Director. She has over 15 years of experience in clinical pharmacy practice and residency education. She was recognized with the Preceptor of the Year award in 2022.
Our faculty has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and regularly presents at national meetings. They maintain active involvement in professional organizations such as ASHP, ACCP, and state pharmacy associations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the start date for the residency program?
Our program typically begins in late June or early July with a two-week orientation period. The academic year runs for 12 consecutive months.
Is there an opportunity to moonlight during the residency?
Yes, moonlighting opportunities may be available after residents have demonstrated competency and with approval from the Program Director. Moonlighting cannot interfere with residency responsibilities.
What is the stipend and benefits package?
Our residents receive a competitive annual stipend, health insurance (medical, dental, vision), paid time off, professional meeting registration assistance, and educational allowance. Specific amounts are updated annually.
Do you accept international graduates?
We accept applications from pharmacists who graduated from non-U.S. schools if they have completed FPGEC certification and are eligible for licensure in our state. However, we do not sponsor visas.
How many resident positions do you have?
We currently accept 4 residents per year into our PGY1 program. This size allows for personalized attention and collaboration among the resident cohort.
What teaching opportunities are available?
Residents precept pharmacy students during their introductory and advanced practice rotations. There are also opportunities to lecture at affiliated colleges of pharmacy, with an optional teaching certificate program available.
