Tapping Scripts for Anxiety Relief
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), commonly known as "tapping," is a therapeutic practice that combines somatic stimulation with cognitive awareness. By tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on a source of distress, many people find relief from the physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety.
Understanding the Process
Tapping works by sending a calming signal to the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for the "fight or flight" response. When you tap on these points, you are essentially telling your nervous system that you are safe, allowing your body to exit a state of panic.
To begin, identify your level of anxiety on a scale of 0 to 10. Once you have a number, follow the script below, starting with the "Karate Chop" point (the outer edge of your hand) for the setup, followed by the sequence of points on your face and body.
The Foundational Anxiety Script
Step 1: The Setup (Tap the side of your hand)
Repeat this three times while tapping the Karate Chop point:
"Even though I feel this anxiety in my chest, I deeply and completely accept myself."
Step 2: The Tapping Sequence
Tap 5-7 times on each of the following points while repeating the reminder phrase:
Reminder Phrase: "This anxiety I am feeling."
- Eyebrow: This anxiety.
- Side of Eye: This racing heart.
- Under Eye: This tightness in my body.
- Under Nose: This worry about the future.
- Chin: I choose to acknowledge how I feel.
- Collarbone: It is safe to let go of this tension.
- Under Arm: I am breathing through this moment.
- Top of Head: I choose to feel calm now.
Tips for Effectiveness
- Stay Present: Focus on the physical sensation of the anxiety while you tap. Do not try to suppress the feeling; observe it.
- Consistency: Tapping works best when done consistently. If your anxiety is high, try two or three rounds of the script in a row.
- Adapt the Language: If the script above doesn't feel right, change the words to fit your exact situation. If you are worried about a specific meeting or event, mention it by name.
- Hydration: Drink a glass of water before and after your tapping session. Many practitioners believe this helps with energy flow.
When to Seek Professional Help
While tapping is a powerful self-help tool, it is not a replacement for professional mental health care. If your anxiety is chronic, overwhelming, or interfering with your daily ability to function, please consult a therapist or healthcare provider. Tapping can be a wonderful supplement to traditional therapy, but it is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive support system.
