Why Study Turkish at Trinity?
Turkish is spoken by more than 80 million people and connects Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Trinity College Dublin offers a modern, wellstructured evening programme that caters to busy professionals, postgraduate students and anyone who wishes to learn Turkish in a supportive academic environment.
Course Overview
The Evening Turkish programme runs from September to June, with classes held twice a week (Mondays and Wednesdays) from 18:30 to 20:30. The curriculum follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and is designed to take learners from absolute beginner (A1) to intermediate proficiency (B2) within one academic year.
Key Features
- Small class sizes: Maximum 12 students per group ensures plenty of speaking time.
- Qualified nativespeaker instructors: All teachers hold at least a MA in Turkish Linguistics and have experience teaching adult learners.
- Communicative approach: Emphasis on conversation, listening, and practical usage rather than rote grammar.
- Use of authentic material: News articles, short films, music, and cultural podcasts are integrated into lessons.
- Online support: Access to a dedicated Moodle platform with extra exercises, recordings, and a discussion forum.
What You Will Learn
Each semester focuses on specific language skills:
- Semester 1 (A1A2): Basic pronunciation, everyday greetings, numbers, simple present tense, essential vocabulary for travel and daily life.
- Semester 2 (B1B2): Past and future tenses, complex sentence structures, idiomatic expressions, reading short literary texts, and writing informal emails.
Assessment and Certification
Progress is monitored through continuous assessment: oral presentations, short written assignments, and periodic quizzes. At the end of each semester, students sit a formal exam that aligns with CEFR standards. Successful candidates receive a Trinity College Dublin Certificate in Turkish (A1B2).
