LanguageCert Communicator B2 International ESOL Speaking Practice Paper
The Communicator B2 International ESOL exam assesses the ability of candidates to communicate effectively in English at an upperintermediate level. A friend showed me how you can grow herbs on a windowsill, and I thought it would be a great way to have fresh flavours for my cooking. What I enjoy most is watching the seedlings sprout; its rewarding to see something that started as a tiny seed turn into a plant you can actually use.
Task 2 Long Turn
Prompt Card (30second preparation):
- Describe a memorable journey you have taken abroad.
- Explain why it was memorable.
- Suggest how this experience could influence someones future travel planning.
One of the most memorable trips Ive taken was a twoweek backpacking tour through the Patagonian region of Chile and Argentina. The landscape was dramatically different from anything Id ever seen towering glaciers, windblown steppe and crystalclear lakes. The sheer remoteness forced me to rely on local guides, which helped me learn about the culture and environment in a very personal way. For anyone planning a similar journey, Id recommend budgeting extra time for unpredictable weather, as it can change within minutes and affect both transportation and hiking routes.
Task 3 Collaborative Task
Visual Stimulus: A table showing three possible weekend activities for a group of friends hiking, a city museum tour, and a cooking workshop. Each activity lists cost, time required, and skill level needed.
Task: Decide together which activity you would choose for a group of four friends with different interests and budgets. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each option.
Candidate A: I think the cooking workshop is the best fit because its only 30 per person and doesnt need any prior experience. Even our friend who isnt physically active can join.
Candidate B: Thats true, but the hike only costs 5 for the park entry and gives us a chance to get some exercise after a long week. We could combine it with a picnic, which would be cheap and enjoyable.
Candidate A: Good point. However, the museum tour costs 15 each and lasts three hours, which might be more relaxed for those who prefer indoor activities.
Candidate B: If we pool our money we could actually do both a short hike on Saturday morning, then the museum on Sunday. That way we cover both interests.
Both: Agreed, lets book the hike for Saturday and the museum tickets for Sunday.
5. Practical Tips for Success
- Speak clearly and at a natural pace. Avoid rushing, especially in the long turn.
- Use a variety of connectors. Phrases such as on the other hand, as a result, and for instance help the flow of ideas.
- Show interaction. In the collaborative task, ask followup questions, paraphrase your partners points, and reach consensus.
- Mind your pronunciation. Practice stress and intonation patterns with online tools or languageexchange partners.
