LanguageCert International ESOL Speaking Qualification Handbook

1. Overview

The LanguageCert International ESOL Speaking qualification is designed for learners who need to demonstrate oral proficiency in English for academic, professional or personal purposes. It aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and is offered at five levels: A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1. The handbook provides candidates, teachers and examiners with a clear description of the test format, scoring criteria and administrative procedures.

Key aims of the qualification are:

  • To assess the ability to communicate effectively in reallife situations.
  • To offer a globally recognised certification that can be used for study, work or immigration.
  • To provide a transparent, fair and reliable assessment process.

2. Test Structure

The speaking test consists of two parts, each lasting between 6 and 10 minutes depending on the level. Both the candidate and the examiner interact throughout the session.

Part 1 Interaction

In this section the examiner asks the candidate personal or situational questions that relate to everyday topics (e.g., family, hobbies, work, travel). The purpose is to evaluate the candidates ability to understand spoken English, produce spontaneous responses and maintain a simple conversation.

Part 2 Long Turn

The candidate receives a visual prompt (picture, diagram or short text) and is given 1 minute to prepare. They then speak for 23 minutes, presenting information, giving an opinion or describing a process. This part tests the ability to organise ideas, use appropriate vocabulary and manage discourse.

Both parts are recorded for quality control and to allow reassessment if required.

3. Assessment Criteria

Scoring is based on four descriptors, each rated on a scale from 0 (does not meet the level) to 5 (exceeds the level). The descriptors are:

Descriptor What It Measures
Pronunciation Clarity of speech, stress, intonation and intelligibility.
Fluency & Interaction Ease of speaking, ability to keep conversation flowing, turntaking.
Lexical Resource Range of vocabulary, appropriacy, and ability to paraphrase.
Grammatical Accuracy Correct use of grammatical structures and complexity appropriate to level.

The final score for each descriptor is summed, and the total determines the overall grade (Pass, Merit, Distinction). Detailed band descriptors are provided in the handbook to help candidates understand expectations for each CEFR level.

4. Preparation Tips

Remember: The test evaluates communication skills, not perfection. Focus on making yourself understood and using a varied range of language.
  • Familiarise yourself with the format. Practice both interaction and longturn tasks using past papers.
  • Develop selfmonitoring skills. Record your practice sessions, listen back and note recurring errors.
  • Expand your lexical range. Keep a themed wordbank (e.g., travel, education, health) and practice using synonyms.
  • Work on pronunciation. Use online tools or a language partner to receive feedback on stress and intonation.
  • Time management. During the preparation minute, jot down key points a quick outline helps you stay focused.
  • Simulate exam conditions. Find a quiet place, arrange a mock examiner, and adhere to the exact timing.

5. Supporting Resources

The handbook lists a range of official and supplementary materials:

  • Sample test videos. Available on the LanguageCert website, showing both successful and borderline performances.
  • Practice books. LanguageCert Speaking Practice includes model answers and audio scripts.
  • Online platform. Candidates can book tests, view results and request reassessment through the portal.
  • Teachers guide. Provides detailed marking rubrics, suggested classroom activities and remediation strategies.

All resources are regularly updated to reflect changes in the CEFR and to incorporate feedback from examiners worldwide.
