Overview

The Mary Petzel Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Mary Petzel, an educator and community leader whose passion for learning and commitment to social justice inspired countless students. Since its inception, the scholarship has honored her legacy by providing financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a dedication to community service.

Managed by the nonprofit organization Education Futures Foundation, the scholarship aims to reduce the financial barriers that prevent talented individuals from achieving their full educational potential. Each year, a selection committee reviews applications from across the United States and awards up to ten scholarships, each valued at $5,000.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
• Be enrolled fulltime in an accredited college or university.
• Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
• Demonstrate involvement in community service, leadership activities, or advocacy work.
• Submit a personal essay (500800 words) that reflects Mary Petzels values of compassion, courage, and commitment to education.
• Provide two letters of recommendation: one academic, one from a community or volunteer supervisor.

Students pursuing any field of study are encouraged to apply, though preference is given to those planning careers in education, social work, public policy, or related disciplines.

To apply, candidates must create an account on the scholarship portal, complete the required fields, upload supporting documents, and pay a nominal processing fee of $15 (waived for students receiving federal financial aid).

Benefits & Responsibilities

Recipients of the Mary Petzel Memorial Scholarship receive:

• Invitation to the annual Mary Petzel Legacy Dinner, providing networking opportunities with alumni and donors.
